Get Involved

Becoming a puppy raiser is one of the most meaningful ways to support Guide Dogs for the Blind. Puppy raisers provide a loving home and help lay the foundation for a dog’s future success by teaching essential skills and behaviors.

A puppy raiser conducts a training session with a yellow lab puppy in training. The raiser is smiling and reaching into her treat bag to reward the puppy who looks up at her eagerly.

As a puppy raiser, you will:

● Welcome a GDB puppy into your home at around 8–10 weeks old
● Teach good house manners and basic obedience cues
● Socialize your puppy in a variety of environments (stores, parks, public transportation, etc.)
● Attend regular club meetings, outings, and training sessions
● Provide consistent love, structure, and routine
● Care for the puppy until it is ready to return to GDB for formal training

You don’t need to be a dog expert—just committed, patient, and eager to learn. Our club and the larger GDB community provide training, mentorship, and support every step of the way.

Not ready for the commitment of raising a puppy full time? Become a puppy sitter!

Puppy Sitters play an important role in supporting both puppies and puppy raisers. By providing short-term care, sitters give puppies opportunities to experience new environments and practice their skills outside their usual routines. These experiences help puppies build confidence, adaptability, and focus—key qualities for their future guide dog training. Puppy sitters follow Guide Dogs for the Blind guidelines and receive training and support through GDB and our club.
